Abstract

Absorption spectra of Co(II) have been studied in molten mixtures of ZnCl2 and AlCl3 both as a function of melt composition and of temperature. The spectral changes have been interpreted in terms of an octahedral-tetrahedral equilibrium involving chloro-complexes of Co(II), analogous to those observed in earlier work on Ni(II) in mixtures of KCl and ZnCl2.
