Abstract

Two case histories of the performance of a compressible embankment foundation are analyzed using the Cam-Clay constitutive model and a finite element consolidation program. The I-95 highway embankment test section and the East Atchafalaya Basin flood control levee test section were chosen for analysis. Performance criteria evaluated include the magnitude and rate of horizontal and vertical displacements and the generation and dissipation of excess pore pressures. The major discrepancy between observed and predicted results is underprediction of lateral deformations in the softer, normally consolidated soils and consequent underprediction of vertical centerline settlement.
