Abstract

While the appearance of nonlinear devices as loads in electric power systems is not a new phenomenon, this sector of the total demand is significantly increasing and has reached substantial levels in many areas. Experience has shown that the configuration of the power system to which these devices are attached can be such as to cause a resonance condition to develop. This paper proposes a method to evaluate a system configuration so that an evaluation of possible problems due to harmonic voltage resonance can be made. This paper also offers a method of determining the harmonic voltage magnitudes which can develop at any bus in the system due to the voltage resonance. This method will produce results with enough accuracy to reduce the need to run multiple Newton-Raphson power flow studies which have been modified to permit the inclusion of harmonic voltages and currents.
