Abstract

As president of Costa Rica from 1994 to 1998, José María Figueres played a key role in transforming the Costa Rican economy, helping to move the country up the value chain in the global production process. Figueres's success in bringing Intel into Costa Rica led to a major shift in the country's main exports - from bananas and coffee to microprocessors.
