Abstract

ASEAN cities need to create forward-looking urban environmental strategies to guide environmental betterment of the region's cities. Development of urban environmental strategies for major cities in ASEAN could result in: targeting of limited financial and human resources to address the highest priority environmental problems; an increased likelihood that basic causes of urban environmental problems would be addressed rather than symptoms and proximate causes only; better coordination of systemwide and community-based efforts to improve the urban environment; and development of approaches, standards, and technologies more appropriate to the nature of problems in ASEAN cities. -from Author
