Abstract

Various techniques to manage the knowledge in spin-offs are discussed. The organization needs to decide how resources will be used to create new knowledge and what knowledge should be brought in or adapted from the parent to be economical. Spin-off has the capability to obtain the parent's knowledge in terms of market opportunities and general administrative issues. Spin-offs normally operate in the same industry spaces as the parent and hence do not need to reinvent knowledge about the market. It is recommended to meet the needs of the new entity rather than attempting to superimpose previous structures, since the spin-off is different from the parent and may need different management protocols in order to be successful. The parent should help the spin-off in formalizing its knowledge management practices that requires sharing of expertise, technologies, and communication architectures.
