Localized strain and the cyclic stress-strain response of polycrystals

Abstract

A critical review of the cyclic stress-strain response of polycrystalline metal, and its relationship to that of single crystals is offered. The focus will be on FCC metal, of both wavy and planar slip modes. Single crystals of wavy slip mode show a cyclic stress-strain curve (CSSC) containing the well known plateau associated with persistent slip band (PSB) behavior. The degree to which the fatigue plastic strain is localized in PSB's is well documented. Although PSB's occur in polycrystals, both at the surface and the bulk, the observed occurrences of plateaus in the cyclic stress-strain curves are rare, and generally associated with ramp loading which promotes hardening and dislocation structures similar to those found in single crystals. The frequent absence of plateaus in polycrystalline cyclic response is explained as a texture effect, as is the apparent 'inverse' grain size effect often observed. The interactive effects of twins and special grain boundaries/grain misorientations on the cyclic response are also taken into account. Many fewer results, both for single crystals and polycrystals, are available for planar slip metals. The differences between the cyclic responses of mono- and polycrystals are greater than in wavy slip metals. These differences are explained partly in terms of mechanical effects, such as anisotropy, and partly in terms of Taylor Lattice dislocation behavior that prevails in planar slip metals, rather than the dislocation agglomeration behavior of wavy slip metals.
