Abstract

Frank Wilczek, a particle theorist and a Nobel Prize winner for physics in 2004, has sharing his view regarding his scientific interests. He shared the award with David Gross and David Politzer for their work in the early 1970s on the strong force, which binds quark together inside protons, neutrons and other subatomic particles. Wilczek, together with Gross, discovered that force between quarks becomes stronger as they move further apart. Their discovery known as "asymptotic freedom" explains why free quarks are never seen but are instead confined inside protons, neutrons and hadrons, and can not be removed. Their work helped to lay the foundations for quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the theory that describes the strong force in the Standard Model of particle physics. Wilczek is optimistic about the future of physics and intends to take a keen interest in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which is scheduled to be open in CERN in the year 2007.
