Abstract

This chapter looks to unveil a theoretical framework for school administrators and teachers to critically examine the possibilities and challenges of parental involvement in the school context. It extends this framework to examine the practice of parental expectations in the home. The chapter also looks to illuminate three out-of-school contexts in which Latinx parents actively communicate their expectations to support their children’s education: religiosity, family, and community. Findings in other studies indicate that the academic performance of students in different communities of color was increased when participants reported a religious affiliation. The chapter considers parental expectations to manifest in three ways to support the education of children. These manifestations are: the impact of religiosity on education; parental belief, guidance, and monitoring; and the acquisition of cultural capital through community resources.
