Abstract

Most 19th century travellers to Mexico had to go through the port of Veracruz. From the sea the city was an impressive sight, but disappointment set in as people found the port unimposing and unhealthy. Many were relieved to depart from the city, but others' disillusion was shortlived as they began to discover its redeeming qualities. -C.A.Middleton
