Abstract
The 5th Grade modification of the Keepin' it REAL curriculum is available in a Multicultural version containing a 15-lesson curriculum supplemented by a video with 5 segments that introduce the production process and illustrate each of the four core strategies: Refuse, Explain, Avoid and Leave - as real life illustrations depicting fhe four core strategies.Features and Advantages. The Multicultural version of the Keepin' it REAL curriculum contains resistance, strategies-based lessions for substance abuse prevention based upon culturally grounded prevention priciples found in the variety of cultures found in the Southwest (in particular) although it is a curriculum designed to change the drug attitudes and behavoirs of culturally diverse students anywhere. The Multicultural version of Keepin' it REAL is supplemented by a video illustrating each of the core strategies - Refuse, Explain, Avoid, and Leave - particular to this curriculum version.Possible Commercial Applications: The combined lessons and the videos provide a self-contained drug prevention curriculum for adolescent students (esp. grade 5). As such and used in conjunction owit the available teacher training module, they are commerically appealing in any areas in which a wide variety of students from diverse racial, ethnic and grographical backgrounds reside and attend schools because of the emphasisi on a wide range of cultures and values. While most particular to the Southwest environment, both the materailas and videos could be easily adapted to other regions that require materials appropirate to a broad strectrum of students and their families.
