Isovector deformation parameters and core polarization

Abstract

Analysis of measurements of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering cross sections on 116,118,120,122,124Sn are reported. The isovector and isoscalar quadrupole deformation parameters β1 and β0 are obtained in a set of isotopes from a comparison with published parameters from (p, p′) measureements. The relation β1 > β0 anticipated from shell model arguments is verified, and its value of about 2 is roughly the same magnitude predicted by the schematic model of core polarization by valence neutrons.
