N2 - Analysis of measurements of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering cross sections on 116,118,120,122,124Sn are reported. The isovector and isoscalar quadrupole deformation parameters β1 and β0 are obtained in a set of isotopes from a comparison with published parameters from (p, p′) measureements. The relation β1 > β0 anticipated from shell model arguments is verified, and its value of about 2 is roughly the same magnitude predicted by the schematic model of core polarization by valence neutrons.
