Abstract

The study of field energized room temperature vulcanized (RTV) coated porcelain insulators, which are exposed for several years in various fields located in coastal, industrial, desert, and high humidity environments in USA and Japan, is presented. Aging performance is evaluated via electrical and material tests, which are compared with new RTV coated and bare porcelain insulators. Electrical tests include the measurement of contamination degree and surface resistance and the determination of critical contamination level that causes flashover at the rated voltage. The material test is conducted via Fourier Transform Infra-Red analysis.
