The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: This virtual collaboration project was generously funded by the Office for Global Engagement at DePaul University. While funding and institutional support made for a smooth experience, executing a COIL project requires tools that are relatively inexpensive, such as a webcam, a microphone, and access to a computer. This COIL collaboration resulted in unexpected outcomes such as further involvement between the two universities, including the relocation of one of my study abroad programs to the partner university. This new collaboration helped reduce the program cost and, most importantly, connected incoming American students with local student “guides.” My partner was also invited to visit my institution and lecture on a seminar on international virtual collaboration for faculty, and other initiatives are underway.

N2 - This article describes how an international education component for an Advertising and Society course was developed and taught for undergraduate students through a virtual collaboration between American and Dutch universities. The creation and implementation of a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project for a major requirement course in the Public Relations and Advertising sequence is described. The project was implemented in a 4-week time frame and consisted of three different phases: an empathy-building phase, development of the core assignment, and a reflection stage. These phases are summarized in the article, and an overview of the course materials is provided and recommendations for educators interested in developing similar efforts are discussed.
