Abstract

A brief history of tariffs in the United States and the theory of small-country and large-country tariffs along with optimal welfare and revenue tariffs and tariff rate quotas are provided. Trade remedy actions under the World Trade Organization with regard to antidumping and countervailing duties and optimal tariffs under the Byrd Amendment are also described. Free trade agreements and trade disputes involving tomatoes, cotton, ethanol, shrimp, garlic, sugar, and beef are also discussed.
