Abstract

This paper discusses the use of design automation programs by educators. The use of commercial software for teaching has been the subject of controversy in academic circles. Opponents argue that commercial software promotes the 'black box' approach to solving engineering problems; students tend to use the software as a substitute for their own reasoning, opponents feel, and such software can be misused by those who do not fully understand the underlying principles.
