Abstract

Polymers have become the material of choice for high voltage outdoor insulators. Since polymers are susceptible to aging and degradation due to weathering, it is necessary to know when to change the insulators to avoid costly sudden flashover. This necessitates the inspection, maintenance and change out procedure for polymeric insulators. This paper discusses issues related to these and other related issues and furnishes effective alternatives and solutions that are applicable to the insulators in service.
