Abstract

This paper contains a discussion of innovative high voltage DC technologies for transmission systems. The main subjects are multiterminal systems, and meshed (networked) systems. These systems are motivated by reliability requirements and expected large scale increase in generation resources far from load centers. A further motivation is the maximal use of transmission rights of way for bulk power transmission applications. Examples are shown taken from the western interconnection in North America although the general applicability elsewhere is highlighted.
