Incorporating sustainability into chemical engineering education

Abstract

Some of the educational practices that continued to be employed to incorporate sustainability concepts into chemical engineering education are discussed. a benchmark study was conducted by the Center for Sustainable Engineering (CSE), a consortium of the University of Texas at Austin, Arizona State University, and Carnegie Mellon University to examine these practices. More than 1,300 academic department chairs and program heads from 366 engineering colleges from the US were asked to identify faculty who were active in incorporating sustainability into their teaching and research. Additional individuals were identified through their publications or participation in educational workshops related to sustainability. Investigations revealed that there were four primary means of incorporating sustainable engineering content and concepts into chemical engineering curricula.
