Abstract
An analysis was performed to estimate whether a competitive container service can be established in Guaymas as part of a multimodal corridor for cargo bound for the United States. The Port of Guaymas has unused capacity that could allow for fast and efficient vessel turnaround since the port does not experience the congestion of larger, regularly scheduled ports of call. After the first version of the model for the Port of Guaymas was finished, the operation personnel of the port was invited to review the data. Once the maximum capacity in TEUs of the Port of Guaymas was determined, the next step was to estimate the capacities of the rest of the components of the multimodal corridor. Several approaches were considered for the overall evaluation of the corridor, corresponding to different levels of operation and mode splits. A major obstacle for the viable operation of the Guaymas-Arizona container service is the lack of a provider of an integrated service that includes shipping lines, railroads, and freight-forwarding services.
