HYDROLYSIS OF CELLULOSICS BY ENTEROBACTERIA.

Abstract

Toxic shock syndrome is considered. A more extensive investigation of hydrolysis of cellulosic materials by some of Tierno's strains was undertaken. This included culturing them on a standard microbiological growth medium to which CLD-2 or substances known to induce cellulase of BETA -glucosidase activity had been added. Following this, supernatant solutions as well as preparations of disrupted cells were assayed for activity on alpha -cellulose, carboxymethylcellulose, p-nitrophenyl- BETA -D-glucopyranoside, and cellobiose to determine whether any cellulase or BETA -glucosidase had been formed. The preliminary result of this study are presented.
