N1 - Funding Information: Finally, we would like to acknowledge the support of the IET Editorial office throughout the selection and publication process of the Special Issue. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to the dedicated reviewers who contributed their valuable time and effort during the review process. We hope that this collection of papers contributes to the active discussion amongst researchers in both academia and industry on energy-efficient computing of emerging embedded and IoT devices. Funding Information: Engineering at the Arizona State University, where he has established and heads the Compiler and Microarchitecture Labs (CML) (http://aviral.lab.asu.edu/). He received his Ph.D. and Masters in Information and Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine, and bachelors in Computer Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He is a 2011 NSF CAREER Award Recipient, and recipient of 2012 Outstanding Junior Researcher in CSE at ASU. His works have received several best paper nominations, including at DAC 2017, and a best student paper award at VLSI 2016. His students have received outstanding Ph.D. student award in CSE @ ASU in 2017, and outstanding MS student award in CSE at ASU in 2012 and 2010. Prof. Shrivastava's research lies in the broad area of ‘Software for Embedded and Cyber-Physical Systems’. More specifically, Prof. Shrivastava is interested in topics around (i) Compilers and microarchitectures for heterogeneous and many-core computing, (ii) protecting computation from soft errors, and (iii) Precise timing for Cyber-Physical Systems. His research is funded by NSF, DOE, NIST, and several industries including Microsoft, Raytheon Missile Systems, Intel, Nvidia, etc. He serves on the organizing and program committees of several premier embedded system conferences, including DAC, ICCAD, ISLPED, CODES+ISSS, CASES and LCTES. He is currently serving as Associate Editor for ACM Transactions Embedded Computing Systems, IEEE Transactions on MultiScale Computing, IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design, Springer International Journal on Parallel Processing (Springer IJPP) and Springer Design Automation for Embedded Systems. He has served as the program chair of CODES+ISSS 2017 and 2018, and LCTES 2019. Funding Information: Prabhat Mishra is a Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Science and Engineering at the University of Florida, USA. He is a UF Preeminence Term Professor, the Research Director of the Nelms Institute for the Connected World, and a member of the Florida Institute of Cybersecurity. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of California, Irvine, in 2004. His research interests include embedded and cyber-physical systems, hardware security and trust, computer architecture, energy-aware computing, formal verification, system-on-chip validation, and quantum computing. His research projects are sponsored by both federal agencies (NSF, AFRL, DARPA, ARO and AFOSR) and industry (SRC, Raytheon, Intel, Cisco, Harris, and IBM). His research has been recognized by several awards including the NSF CAREER Award, IBM Faculty Award, ten best paper awards and nominations, and EDAA Outstanding Dissertation Award. Prof. Mishra currently serves as an Associate Editor of ACM Transactions on Design Automation of Electronic Systems, IEEE Transactions on VLSI Systems, and Journal of Electronic Testing. He is a recipient of 2019 IET Outstanding Editor Award. He is an ACM Distinguished Scientist and a Senior Member of IEEE, and served as an ACM Distinguished Speaker during 2016–2019. Funding Information: Preeti Ranjan Panda received his B. Tech. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and his M. S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Irvine. He is currently a Professor in Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Delhi and has previously worked at Texas Instruments and Synopsys. His research interests are: Embedded Systems Design, CAD/VLSI, Post-silicon Debug/Validation, System Specification and Synthesis, Memory Architectures and Optimisations, Hardware/Software Codesign, and Low Power Design. He is the author of two books: Memory issues in Embedded Systems-on-chip: Optimizations and Exploration (Kluwer Academic Publishers) and Power-efficient System Design (Springer). He is a recipient of an IBM Faculty Award and a Department of Science and Technology Young Scientist Award. Research works authored by Prof. Panda and his students have received several honours, including Best Paper nominations at CODES+ISSS, DATE, ASPDAC, and VLSI Design Conference, and most downloaded paper of ACM TODAES journal. Prof. Panda has served on the Editorial Boards of IEEE Transactions on Computer Aided Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems, ACM Transactions on Design Automation of Electronic Systems, IEEE Embedded Systems Letters, Springer International Journal of Parallel Programming, and as Technical Program co-Chair of the International Conference on Hardware/Software Codesign and System Synthesis and International Conference on VLSI Design and Embedded Systems.
