Abstract
The paper describes the setting up and operation of the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis in the USA. The original aim of the Center was to carry out fundamental research into geographical analysis using GIS. Additional aims are to develop the theory, methods and technical resources of GIS, to increase the number of national experts in this area, to propagate GIS in the scientific community as a technology furthering research, and to create a centre of information designs. Examples of the projects undertaken by the Center, including the production of instructional material and courses, are presented. -P.Cooke
