Abstract

Development of general constitutive models that can be used to model composite structural systems subjected to impact loads is challenging. Often, approximations are introduced in these models in order to reduce their complexity. In other words, these models require a number of material parameters that characterize the composite behavior as input-The more sophisticated the model, the larger is the number of material parameters. A special version of LS-DYNA is being developed with a new composite material model called MAT-COMPOSITE-TABULATED-PLASTICITY-DAMAGE or*MAT213. The minimum input to this model is a set of 12 stress-strain curves (at a known temperature-strain rate combination) along with material parameter values such as Young's modulus, elastic and plastic Poisson's ratio, yield stresses, etc. These data are needed to drive the elastic and inelastic deformation model. The damage and failure models require additional input. Generation of high-fidelity data is challenging for a number of reasons. In this paper, we discuss the experimental techniques to generate the material behavior data for a unidirectional composite-The T800/F3900 composite, for the deformation, damage, and failure models. The last part of the paper deals with the use of MAT213 to model an impact test.
