Abstract

This paper addresses experiences with unsaturated flow modeling of expansive clays. Results from unsaturated flow modeling must be viewed carefully in the context of several potential problems that arise in determination of soil properties and modeling of surface flux conditions. The SWCC is of particular importance in unsaturated flow modeling. Complicating issues for determination of the SWCC for expansive soils include volume change and desiccation cracking, which impact the AEV and slope of the SWCC.
