note = "Funding Information: This special section was initiated during the course of an NSF-sponsored workshop in University of Michigan in 2016, participated by the guest editors. A LAND affiliated symposium was organized at the 2017 annual meeting of US Regional Association of International Association of Landscape Ecology (US-IALE), Baltimore, MD, April 9-14, 2017, partially funded by the NASA LCLUC program through a grant to MSU (NNX15AD51G). Potential contributors were invited to attend the symposium and gave presentations of their papers. By putting forth a compilation of cutting-edge researches addressing these four objectives, particularly those from the experiences of rapid urbanizing countries, we hope this special section can offer a fresh and holistic perspective to scholars, urban planners, city managers, and policy makers on how urbanization can be managed in a more sustainable fashion. Funding Information: The guest editors thank all authors and reviewers for their time and effort to make this special section possible. We also want to express our gratitude to the editorial team of Landscape and Urban Planning for their continuous support along the editorial process, especially Dr. Wei-Ning Xiang. Financial support was provided by the Land Cover and Land Use Change Program (LCLUC) of National Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA of the USA (NNX15AD51G).",
