Abstract

Mathematical solutions were obtained for the dimensionless local dissolution flux from non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) pools under nonequilibrium (NE) conditions with and without biodegradation. The NE solution for the local dissolution flux without biodegradation goes from its maximum value at the start of the pool to a near constant, but lower value at the end of the pool. This occurs because the water at the beginning of the pool contains no solute. For the NE solution with biodegradation, the local dissolution flux decreases along the pool for the same reason. However, as larger biological sink terms are added, the flux levels off sooner and at higher values due to the continual biodegradation of substrate across the pool.
