Abstract
Environmental auditing is a multipurpose activity that provides information that helps organizations meet environmental management goals, ensures compliance with regulations or standards, andcommunicates these efforts to relevant stakeholders. With the aid of existing literature and multiple examples, the chapter provides a survey and summary of environmental auditing as it has been operationalized over the past 40 years. It seeks to develop a framework for conceptualizing environmental auditing and examines how behavioral and institutional factors matter for their adoption and effectiveness. Lastly, the chapter investigates challenges and tensions related to environmental auditing and identifies consideration for their design and implementation.
