Abstract

The paper presents the results of electrical tests (60-Hz, switching and lightning impulses) and contamination tests performed on four different types of synthetic insulator (rated 735 kv) and on a chain of 32 standard insulators. The performance of the different synthetic insulators is analyzed and compared with that of porcelain insulators and the major parameters influencing insulator behavior are discussed. The flashover mechanism of contaminated synthetic insulators is investigated and the results show that while the electrical performance of these insulators is more or less the same as that of porcelain ones, their contamination performance, when new, is far superior.
