Efficient light management in narrow-bandgap perovskite solar cells

Abstract

Perovskite solar cells have made unprecedented efficiency improvements for bandgaps wider than 1.5 eV, but narrow-bandgap perovskites still have low efficiency in single-junction and tandem cells. A significant challenge is the front-surface reflectance inherited from the superstrate device fabrication. In this work, we applied a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) light scattering layer to a 1.22-eV-bandgap perovskite cell and demonstrated 2.6 mA/cm2 increase in short-circuit current density. We further performed optical simulations that confirm the effectiveness of reducing reflection with the PDMS layer, and we show that the parasitic absorption in the front transparent conductive oxide and contact layers are responsible for the other optical losses.
