Abstract

We have made direct in situ observations of the reduction of small particles of PdO to Pd metal using electron microscopy. We find that the reduction at low temperature (<500°C) proceeds via the formation of a metal shell surrounding an oxide core. Complete reduction leads to the production of metal particles containing central voids.
