Direct evidence for Coulombic ejection of electron-desorbed ions

Abstract

We have measured energy distributions for F+ and F2+ ions, electron-desorbed from fluorine impurities on an aluminum surface and for Cl+ Cl2+ and I+ I2+ electron-desorbed from alkali halide surfaces by 12.5 keV electrons. The mean energies of the doubly-charged ions are twice the energies of the respective singly-charged ions. This result provides the first direct evidence for the Coulombic expulsion mechanism in electron-stimulated desorption proposed by Knotek and Feibelman.
