Abstract
A major North American automobile manufacturer recently identified design of experiments as the key technology used by the Japanese automobile industry to achieve their present competitive advantage. The ability to engineer quality into basic product and process design, and then to translate this into a manufacturing system that operates at optimum effectiveness is critical in today's environment. This paper discusses the role of experimental design in this activity, and provides examples illustrating its application to process improvement and optimization.
