Abstract

The purpose of this report is to describe the present state of development of synthetic insulators, their characteristics, and their major application areas. Synthetic insulators have very desirable characteristics for high-voltage transmission lines; however, their durability has not been proven to be equivalent to that of porcelain insulators. Their large-scale application in transmission lines between 125 kV and 500 kV subjected to extremely heavy pollution is warranted.
