Controlled porosity alloys through solidification processing: a modelling study

Abstract

A new directional solidification method called GASAR has been developed in Ukraine for producing solids with controlled porosity. The concentration, distribution, size and geometry of the bubbles are manipulated by varying different process variables. The present work investigates the thermodynamics and kinetics of metal-rich alloys, using the prototypical Cu-H system. The eutectic is highly asymmetric, which leads to an extremely small range of compositions and solidification temperatures where stable eutectic growth is possible. An earlier theoretical study has shown that bubble nucleation occurs only in highly pointed pits and sharp cracks in ceramic particles present in the melt.
