Abstract

Shipboard cranes for cargo transfer at sea can be subjected to severe pendulation of the cargo. This presents a grave danger to the cargo, equipment, and most importantly to personnel. To improve the current operation, a rudimentary simulator is constructed for assessing the interaction of system changes with the human operator. Chaos control and how can it can achieve the goal with only relatively small control perturbations, modeling of pendulation in relevant sea states, and modified riggings to improve performance and facilitate control is also presented.
