Abstract
Temporal discounting describes the devaluation of behavioral outcomes when their receipt is delayed. This chapter reflects on the authors’ collective experience in the study of temporal discounting, how our laboratory research findings with human and nonhuman species have influenced our understanding of public health-related behaviors. This reflection was conducted in the context of Skinner’s (1956) paper in which he provides several practical maxims for conducting research. Here we evaluate those maxims in light of our collective experience and offers a few more the reader might find useful. We conclude by outlining practical ways to encourage future advances in translational research.
