Abstract
Church-based health promotion (CBHP) is a large- scale effort by the church community to improve the health of its members through education, screening, referral, treatment, and group support. The purpose of this paper is to characterize published CBHP programs. Information will be included about types of papers being published, history and growth of church involvement in health promotion, elements of program attractiveness and success, barriers to program implementation, problems encountered during implementation, and implications for practice. It is hoped that this literature review will serve as a catalyst for future studies related to church-based health promotion.
