Brillouin spectroscopy of Langmuir-Blodgett films

Abstract

Brillouin scattering has been used for the first time to measure the elastic constants of cadmium arachidate films which were deposited by the Langmuir- Blodgett (LB) technique onto glass and aluminum film substrates. A nine-pass tandem Fabry-Perot interferometer was used to analyze the frequencies of light scattered by multiple high frequency thermally excited surface acoustic waves guided by surfaces overcoated with LB films of various thickness. Dramatic changes were observed in the Brillouin spectrum for as few as 11 monolayers. Upper limits for the elastic constants and velocity of sound in the LB films were estimated from the Brillouin components.
