Abstract

The basic principles of microbial cultivation in general are applicable to microalgae. The unique ability of microalgae to utilize light energy, however, sets them apart from nonphotosynthetic microorganisms. The supply of light needs to be satisfied in isolation, cultivation, and maintenance of photoautotrophic and mixotrophic microalgae. This chapter provides a general guidance on screening, isolation, and maintenance of microalgae, and an introduction to various cultivation modes for research and commercial application. A number of basic parameters and methods for measuring growth and biomass productivity as well as advanced techniques for cellular biochemical analysis are provided.
