Abstract

Quality engineers often use attribute control charts to monitor processes with varying sample sizes. Many software packages compute the control chart limits in this situation, based on an average sample size rather than the more correct actual sample size. This article evaluates u control chart robustness to moderate departures from a constant sample size. We show that in some situations, the average run-length performance of the control chart is substantially degraded when control limits are based on the average sample size.
