Abstract

Program understanding is crucial during software maintenance. Variable classification has been found to be useful for program understanding. In this paper, we will present an automatic variable classification technique for COBOL programs and how this has been implemented as a component of the Data-centered Program Understanding Tool Environment (DPUTE) [9]. We have experimented on both small and large COBOL programs using our tool to determine if our methods are useful for program understanding and software maintenance.
