Abstract

The South African tree Combretum caffrum (Combretaceae) has been found to contain two new and cytostatic (P388 lymphocytic leukemia) macrocyclic lactones designated combretastatin D-l (1, ED503.3 μg/mL) and D-2 (2, ED505.2 μg/mL). With the X-ray crystal structure of combretastatin D-l (1) serving as an unequivocal reference point 13C NMR and high field (400 MHz)1H NMR spectral techniques were employed to assign structure 2 to combretastatin D-2.
