Abstract

This is the development of an algorithm that estmiates the parameters of large synchronious generators from on-line measurements. The algorithm requires voltage and current measurements taken at the terminals of the generator. The companion graphic user interface reads these measurements and then calculates and displays the machine model parameters. The main applications are in the electric utility industry where generator parameters are used for stability studies and othe routine power engineering studies. The software uses state estimators of distinctive type. The software embodies a graphic user interface that is tailor made for this application. The algorithm in the software is novel. It includes:- A method to calculate damper winding circuits - no such method exists in the literature- A method to incorporate magnetic saturation in the synchronous generator - this is an application of a known algorithm, but uses a different methodology.-A method to model mathematically a synchronous generator - this uses a known model, but several modifications are enforced to obtain a more accurate model that represents the synchronous generator more effectively. All the above methods/algorithms are incorporated in the main algorithm that calculates the matchine parameters.
