Abstract

Activity-composition relations in the systems CoOZnO and NiOZnO at 1050°C were determined by equilibrium of oxide solid solutions with a metal phase and a gas phase of known oxygen pressure, and by equilibration of CoOZnO solid solutions with a presumably ideal (CoZn) Al2O4 solid solution. Both oxide systems show substantial positive deviations from ideality. The free energies of the reaction: MO (zincite) = MO (rocksalt) are estimated to be +5·8, -4·3 and -8·7 kcal/mole for ZnO, CoO, and NiO, respectively.
