Abstract

When the highly anisotropic quasi two dimensional organic metal (TMTSF)2C104 and similar Bechgaard salts are subjected to moderate to high magnetic fields at low temperatures, a wealth of phenomena are observed experimentally. These include the cascade of magnetic field induced spin density wave transitions, quantum Hall like steps in the Hall resistance with anomalous sign changes, a semimetallic state with fixed Landau level filling which remarkably persists from 7.5 Tesla to 27 Tesla, a reentrant metallic (?) phase above 27 Tesla with indications of electron localization and rapid Schubnikov-deHaas and deHaas-van Alphen oscillations which seem to span the entire field range, We report on recent experiments and theory on these phenomena with emphasis on what we know, what we think we know and what we certainly don't know, but are trying to understand.
