Abstract

(2S,3S,4R)-4-Amino-3-hydroxy-2-methylvalerate, an amino acid constituent of the antitumor antibiotic bleomycin, has been prepared from L-rhamnose. This approach to a chiral 3-hydroxy-2-methylcarboxylate constitutes an alternative to the stereoselective aldol condensation.
