Description

We will enhance economic development and community resilience by supporting university students
through our rapidly-growing YouthMappers consortium, now 120 campuses in 38 countries, to create and
use high-quality geospatial data in unmapped places. First, we will support YouthMappers to create
foundational quality geospatial data in places where USAID has a presence, and make it available as a
public good, where it can be used in the design and implementation of USAID programs. This support
includes promoting remote and local field data production, validation of feature location, and addition of
key attributes to OpenStreetMap. Activities include recruitment of new chapters, onboarding, training,
mapping campaigns, and validation support. Second, we will organize capacity building activities to
promote YouthMappers to create their own local projects that support economic development, improved
communities, and government accountability. We will empower the students of the YouthMappers
consortium by offering virtual (remote) internships for students at US HEIs, and field (local) internships
in LMIC chapters. This also includes expanding the YouthMappers Leadership Fellowship Workshop for
students to grow and lead peers in their home regions, and implementing the YouthMappers Research
Fellowship Symposium for teams of students and their faculty mentors to create and use open geospatial
data in their research. In addition, we will explore ways to leverage, synergize, or stimulate USAID
Mission buy-in to this work, and other analysis using open geospatial data. Third, we will provide the
leadership and organizational structure needed to grow and manage the YouthMappers program. We will
provide chapter and individual recognition to encourage innovation and quality, and we will implement
an expanded consortium governance structure that encourages even greater ownership of the network and
its mission among participants. We will place special emphasis on female participation where women are
underrepresented in technology related fields and community based decision-making. In addition to
dedicated publicity and communication around womens and girls issues, we will extend the Let Girls
Map campaign, selecting female representatives from LMIC regions to share their voice about mapping
and the importance of geospatial data with USAID personnel. Building the map, we anticipate that the
results of this effort will include the creation of new high quality geographic data that can strengthen
USAIDs programs and directly support communities in LMIC for economic development and
community resilience. Building mappers, we expect the outcomes to include empowered university
students, with advanced technical workforce skills, and future leadership capacity to address critical
resilience challenges.
