Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders - Summer Institute 2014

Overview and Vision Arizona State University (ASU) is honored and pleased to express its intent to partner in furthering a key component of the Obama Administrations Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). Led by the College of Public Programs (COPP), ASU will participate in this partnership by hosting 25 young African leaders for a six-week professional civic leadership training program at our Downtown Phoenix Campus. Over the course of this program, these young leaders will participate in dynamic and applied coursework tailored to their individual cohort and taught by worldclass faculty and practitioners They will meet and work regularly with local civic leaders and community members including the large African refugee populations who call Phoenix home and they will learn firsthand the challenges and successes associated with developing strong civic leadership and social entrepreneurship models through trips to urban and rural communities throughout Arizona. At the conclusion of the program, participants will come away not only better prepared to affect positive change in their communities, but imbued with the core ideal of COPP and indeed ASU writ large: the simple idea that our fortunes are inextricably intertwined, that the best way to advance our own self-interest is to engage community partners in government and nonprofit organizations to address shared challenges.
