Project Details

Description

Veterans Cognition and Communication Program (ASUF 30006250) Veterans Cognition and Communication Program This request would fund the development of Veterans Cognition and Communication Program associated with the Speech and Language Clinic at Arizona State University (ASU) in Tempe, Arizona. In the program, veterans from ASU and the greater Phoenix community (including community colleges and Upward Bound) would be provided services including: a) memory, attention, and language assessment and evaluations, and b) appropriate therapy for cognitive impairments. This program would be offered to any military veterans re-entering college or transitioning into college, but will be focused on providing services to veterans who suffer cognitive deficits due to traumatic brain injuries or other conditions related to military active duty. A pilot program started in August 2013 generated a great deal of interest from veteran students and veteran support groups. We have support from the Pat Tillman Center at ASU, disability resources at Mesa Community College, the ASU Office for Veteran and Military Academic Engagement, and the local Veterans Upward Bound chapter. The requested funding would provide clinical services for up to 150 veterans.
